ELGAR Symphony No. 1

Music Director of English National Opera and a regular guest conductor of the Philharmonia, Edward Gardner returns to Leicester. La mort de Cléopâtre was spun from Berlioz’s fascination with Shakespeare’s tale of Cleopatra’s suicide following the death of Marc Antony. After its première, conductor Hans Richter heralded Elgar’s First Symphony as ”the greatest symphony of modern times”.
