SMETANA ‘Vltava’
BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 4
DVORÁK Symphony No. 8
Premièred in 1804 at the last concert in which Beethoven appeared as soloist, this work was heralded in the press as “the most admirable, singular, artistic and complex Beethoven concerto ever.” However it was not until Felix Mendelssohn revived the work in 1836 that the work’s rightful place in the core piano repertoire was firmly established. Dvorák’s Eighth Symphony, meanwhile, is a cheery work dominated by influences from the Bohemian folk music that the composer loved.
