In November 1999 Edward II played a farewell performance in a packed De Montfort Hall. Afterwards, hundreds of people wound their way in to the night, intoxicated from an astonishing show, but with the sadness that comes from the end of an era.
Now, ten years to the day (well almost), they’re back. Demand for the legendary folk roots acts has been so huge that they have reformed for selected dates throughout 09 – again culminating in a final date here in Leicester.
And what a part it’s going to be. Orignally called ‘Edward II and the Red Hot Polkas’ their unique splicing of old England dance tunes with sunny sexy grooves transcends superficial notions of ‘crossover’, forging a truly original synthesis from their far-flung musical roots.
Support comes from the equally legendary Dhol Foundation. Led by the irrepressible and fantastically charismatic Johnny Kalsi, the show features a vast array of music styles, drum and bass, tabla hip hop and Bhangra. It all adds up to an amazing amd mighty sound with choreographed moves and a highly energetic performance not to be missed.
Rounding off the bill is DJ Pete Lawrence, (Cooking Vinyl, Big Chill) who kept 99’s crowd dancing in to the small hours. Now he’s back too – Ten Years On.
