The line-up for Village India has something for everyone throughout the day - excellent folk and Indian classical music, the best in classical and Indo jazz fusion, Indian electronica, hottest DJs from the scene and BBC Radio 1, Bollywood, the best in Bhangra and much more!
The Village Stage will also feature exciting traditional and contemporary Indian dance, including vibrant folk dances from Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Assam, Punjab and Gujarat. This will make a fantastic, entertaining and educational day out for the whole family. Confirmed Acts for Sunday include:
Bobby Friction
Great DJ set from the BBC Radio1 and Asian Network’s king of the sounds of Asian Underground. Bobby sets the gold standard for Asian music and Desi Beats and has an international reputation as a genre-mixing turntabilist from Asia to the US, and from the Middle East to the whole of Europe. Check out the grooves!
Sukshinder Shinda
Modern bhangra presented in a unique style that skillfully incorporates Punjabi folk, Bollywood pop, hip-hop and other genres. His latest album Collaborations 2 is an exotic mix of organic Asian instruments down tempo and urban basslines. Check out his great full band line up in this kicking concert!
Arun Ghosh Sextet
Concieved in Calcutta, bred in Bolton, matured in Manchester and currently lives in London. Young Manchester born clarinetist Arun Ghosh and his sextet make original music of South Asian origin with a contemporary jazz attitude, it is the meeting point of Indian classical music and modal jazz. Delicate, rousing, funky and sensually exotic might describe the music in words
Parthiv Gohil
Parthiv Gohil is a big name in the world of playback singing for the Bollywood film industry. He sang the title song and some backing vocals for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film Devdas and more recently in Bhansali's hit film Sawaariya, amongst many others. Parthiv is one of the finest singers in the industry. In the Village India sessions, Parthiv will sing a range of popular songs filled with vibrancy, emotion and energy from the Bollywood film industry.
Fusion Dreams
A cross cultural collaboration, featuring exciting contemporary violin playing with global expressions. Performances include elegant fusions of Carnatic / Hindustani classical music with Irish folk, African and jazz / pop/ blues. This is a concert that will surprise in its virtuosity and complexity while still remaining completely accessible. Ambient and spiritually deep, with exciting and rhythmically powerful compositional elements.
Indus Ensemble
Four creative and virtuoso musicians from diverse musical traditions including Indian Classical, Western Classical and Jazz. Indus’s original compositions cross the spectrum from chilled out and relaxing to fast, driving and rhythmic. Characterised by complex tabla beats, exquisite flute phrases, rhythmic santoor patterns and lyrical sitar tones, Indus create an intricate kaleidoscope of sound and emotion. On stage, the musical communication between the group as well as their use of improvisation never fails to enthral.
Desi Masti
Desi Masti offer a fresh angle on contemporary, traditional and Bollywood dance. With the huge popularity of dance within the Indian film industry it was inevitable that we would program some into the festival and who better to bring that vibrant Bollywood style to the Village than Desi Masti.
Dhanyadhara: Folk Dances of India
Dhanyadhara from Baroda, India featuring twelve Folk Dancers. These performances will be full of life and colour and will add a really authentic edge to the Village. Dhanyadhara Dance Troupe will cover a wide range of traditional dances from across many different Indian regions and will give a genuine insight into the lifeblood of folk movement. The dances will include:
• Gujarat - Meyer, Tippani, Diva and Supada
• Maharashtra - Lavni
• Assam - Bihu Dance
• Rajasthan - Kalbelia, Ghoomar and Terah Talli
• Punjab – Boliyan and Giddha
Shaan Mutiyara Di
Shaan Mutiyara Di are a traditional female folk dance group. Young, fresh, original and energetic, they promote Punjabi virsa through their passion for bhangra and gidha!
