The Grimethorpe Colliery Band are the current National Brass Band Champions of Great Britain, a title they have held for the past two years, and are also the current English National Champions, a title they won at the first attempt. The Band will represent England at the 2008 European Brass Band Championships, which will be held in Stavanger Norway.
The band are probably the most famous brass band in the world since appearing in the British movie Brassed Off, a world wide success which has seen the band tour Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Norway, France, Holland and Sweden and the United States of America plus other northern European Countries. They have been awarded a gold disc for the soundtrack Brassed Off in Great Britain and Australia and are the only brass band to get to number one in the Classic FM Charts.
Grimethorpe Colliery Band was formed in 1917 by a group of miners from the disbanded Cudworth Colliery Band and as been the musical flagship for the mining industry since its inception.
The band have been frontrunners in both new musical commissions, appearing at the BBC Sir Henry Wood Promenade Concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and also in the entertainment scene being the Brass in Concert Entertainment no fewer than thirteen times.
The band have kept their links with the mining industry with the bands main sponsor since the start of 2007 being Powerfuel.
